Machine to Machine communication provides a major challenge to
GSM operators. Although M2M promises growing revenues in
addition to normal channels, it also represents a fundamental
shift in behaviour.
Technically there are large differences between the requirements
of voice customers and M2M/telemetry customers. Whilst obvious
areas such as billing and customer services are easily resolved
there are many more subtle problems with SIM cards, provisioning
and even IP address timeouts.
As solutions are closely connected simple changes to the IP
addressing scheme can have major knock on ramifications.
Drawing on seven years of solving these problems at Orange, I
have a unique understanding of these issues and their
resolution. This has been reinforced with more recent clients
in North America and the UK.
